Feng Shui Books

Lets look at some interesting Feng Shui books!

Starting at Xuan Kong systems. Most of them are very related to a legendary Grandmaster called Jiang Dahong, as members probably know.

XKDG is thinking of itself as to be the original system, while XKFX(Flying star) is what Shen managed to recover.

First to understand that we need the story of Shen. We can read it here:
https://bazifenshui.blogspot.com/2010/10/flying-star-shen-zhu-reng.html
(at the bottom of the post)

So now we have 2 divisions, XKDG and XKFX both with the idea they are close to what was originally practiced by Jiang Dahong. The interesting factor is that both are so different that its difficult to think how both can be the same system.

Yet, both are also very interesting and many practitioners use both at the same time.

So lets look at XKDG, as the info here is much less.
For it I really like the book below. It is expensive and we do need extra material to use it(at least compass/Lo Pan for XKDG), but it gives a lot of very useful info, one of the cases when we can actually practice the system by itself with only one book and some extra material like the compass. Very good and useful in my point of view.
Of course, the system isn't for everyone, if someone decided to try it with the book, may want to read on it around the net, as there are doubts on many parts of it.

I personally accept that it works very well, as we have used it many times. But it is difficult and needs very good compass.

https://www.amazon.com/Xuan-Kong-Gua-Exactly-Dummies/dp/9671303889/

For XKDG searching around a few more books can show up. Some is just reference material, there also is a book by Russian author that I'm not familiar with.

That somewhat covers it I think. There are materials in the net, but can't think of anything to mention specifically.

It had a date selection component, originally only for use with the system itself, but then expanded to more then Feng Shui. Very little info about it in English, but uses very similar principles then the system itself, so much of it can be guessed even without a book. And there are a few books, some can be found around the net in libraries, but aren't sold anymore. Won't post link as not sure if it would be problem with copyright to post.

That seems to cover most of XKDG in English I'm aware of.

For Flying Star there are many books. So much that covering even small part will be challenging. So lets just look at a few.

Translations of the 4 classic texts for Xuan Kong, Shen was teaching all of them back then. All translations are made by Hung Hin Cheong.
All are very good, in my view as we have much extra info without that the text itself won't be very useful.

That translations cover:
Purple White Script.
Ode to Flying Star
Ode to Mysticism
And Secrets of Xuan Kong.

While all of them have been studied back then, not all of them are equaly used today.
People seem to focus a lot on Purple White Script and a little on Secrets of Xuan Kong.
In my view, that is sad, as Ode to Flying Star, even if negative at times, have some very useful ideas, like how the forms around can be considered as stars and how that interacts and add layers of meaning to everything.

Calculations in Purple White Script can be very complicated. At times it moves to Na Yin and back to flying and trigrams and overall it can be challenging to calculate.
However, from what we have seen some ideas like House and Period Master seems to work very well.

We can also see ideas from QMDJ, like the Doors in much simplified way.
They are expensive, though, but they do offer a lot more then most Flying Star books out there do.

Other then that I don't want to recommend a specific Flying Star book, as most of them cover the same material. However, I can say that the material from Lillian Too is often underrated. She had some very nice working ideas not just for cures.

Yin Feng Shui, I don't want to comment on that. All history seems to suggest the sooner people stop practicing that the better for everyone(even more so for Feng Shui practitioners), but that is just my view/impression.

So lets go to San He and some general idea stuff.
When it comes to Water movements, I can't recommend anything. There are books about it and there are simplified ideas, but haven't tested any of them extensive enough to be able to recommend.

However, for foundational basic stuff, I can(and often do) recommend this nice book.
https://www.amazon.com/Guide-Feng-Shui-Simple-Guides/dp/0751335886/

Name may sound silly, but its very good book for the foundational ideas that often are missing in many books, while without them any practice will have trouble working.

Another book worth mentioning:

https://www.amazon.com/Five-Classics-Fengshui-Sinica-Leidensia/dp/9004249869/

The classic about the water dragon is must read(I linked it some time ago in another topic, so won't go into that again). In it we can see some text by Jiang Dahong where it seemed there wasn't as much worry about hiding information as in his books, so it was interesting to see.

Soo... What other classical book there are. I can't recommend them, but 2 more have to be mentioned in my view.

First is:

https://www.amazon.com/Earth-Study-Discern-Truth-Second/dp/9833332692/

Much respect to Terence for the initiative.
I can't recommend the book, however, even though he was where the systems of Xuan Kong seems to revolve around.

All of this is just my idea, of course. Just want to provide some basis so people looking for how to go into these systems have a starting point. After that they should be able to pick up on their own and figure out where to go.

Hopefully it can be helpful feel free to ask if you have any questions. : )

May be a nice time for a little update here. : )
Finally, after many years I feel like the system is working in a coherent and wholesome way(this time Feng Shui). That was thanks to Joey Yaps free recording of his new courses. They make promotions where we can watch it free then its sold in a complete way. I had some doubts on watching, but it was really, really good for me.

I focus on "for me", as one of my most important part I was missing was what is the base layer of it all. I did know all work as layers on top of each other, XKFX, XKDG etc. and by themselves they worked, often really well, but the base didn't feel there.
And they have made wonderful work in establishing that and it is different(a little different, but still different) then most other sources making it actually work well.

I also enjoy Lillian Toos materials. I think she is not mentioned enough and her materials are wonderful sometimes. There are many books there, however so finding exactly what we are searching for can be challenging. I will slowly but surely plan to read many of them when there is free time to and hopefully will update with what is best to read for people, if all go ok.

P.S. We aren't affiliated with anyone mentioned so far, they just did good stuff for the community and are providing good info, worth mentioning it here for people searching I think. : )

I have also been reading a number of metaphysics book and I would like to share 2 books that I really like :

(a) Joey Yap's Pure Feng Shui: Bring abundance to your relationships, and success to your career
=> an easy to read but yet practical book that you can immediately put them into action. It focuses on application and less on theory. I also like all the feng shui cures that were shared

(b) Joey Yap's Personal Date selection
Again a very practical book that shares about how you can identify the inauspicious dates and the use of 12 Day Officers

Yea, its good book for sure, second one.
I haven't read first.
Date selection seems to work very nicely in the way described there.
If someone can't afford it or buy it in their country, the base ideas are also described here:
https://en.wikibooks.org/wiki/Ba_Zi/Date_Selection
And in few other places, around the net. And in many books, of course.

Yet in this specific book in there there is some more interesting stuff, hours and stars and stuff. Its good book for sure.

I started it the other way around, first studied Xuan Kong date selection, then tried QMDj date selection and now finally arriving at the simple 4 Pillar stuff... And last one seems to be the most useful for us, currently, the plan is to make our first paid android app based on that, as it seems there are overwhelming amount of sources now, not to mention the almanacs by themselves, so can count the knowledge already out there I think.

Anyway, the book describes it great and some simple bazi knowledge can give it much depth if we add it.

While on Date Selection, some of the classical base books for it can be found here I think:
https://ctext.org/

Then google translate can do wonders, although can't translate five arts terminology, so need to do some manual changes(or make app for it), but it can become readable with some effort. At least it did for some other five arts text I was testing on. As I tried to learn Chinese, its just too much characters to remember and the end result seems to be similar to using automatic translator if we know some of the basic syntax.

https://archive.org/
Also seem to have some of the classic books, also had many books about the calendar accessible.
This one seems interesting, it was next on my list:

https://archive.org/details/tongsingchineseb0000wind_r3w7

But there are many more including some from centuries ago that can be fully downloaded, as they are in public domain now.

I saw Skinner with other authors also has published book on the almanac few years ago, its likely interesting as well.

I think good source to add is here:
https://www.youtube.com/c/KevinChanBazi

We have posted his blog many times before and while he was in the other forums some years back I don't think he still is. I started watching his videos some time ago and I really like it. Very good info, he answers questions etc. can definitely recommend it to people interested in the stuff presented there. Feng Shui and QMDj seemed the most interesting part, in my view. All is free as well,

I started with the 8 mansions videos...I think can be beneficial for many practitioners and I do find this view very close to what I find working for me.
New JY courses have changes in them, even the names/translations are different, so there is more after this, but there is very good base here that one can use and add more with time.

I think the live videos were in facebook, I avoid facebook when I can, so no idea there, but they can be watched in youtube, so all is good, in my view. : )

Another very interesting source here:
https://www.youtube.com/@PheyeDesign/videos

This is getting much deeper into the system in a way that, in my humble view, all practitioners of XKFX could benefit from seeing.

P.S. I do have to say that there are easier and much more comfortable ways for the initial angle from the maps. Some years ago I posted it for google maps, that is still there, but its not very usable now from Google, yet there are alternatives from Open Street Map now. Its here:
https://osmcompass.com/
(click Draw Single Leg Route, Find the Place, then Show Compass, can even see the buildings in many parts of the world for easier alignment).

The next part, I get why, I'm not sure how reliable it is as that information have to count on NASA and other organizations like that that are famously unreliable in way too many aspects... So how different the shape of the Earth is to what is known we may not know anytime soon. But this should be closer to just using the Grid North I guess, so its wise to adjust.

If there is enough interest someday and I'm back on the Javascript stuff can look into it, yet for now seems fair the calculator for that to be on their site(even though there are other ones in the net on Javascript). Yet I was looking more into magnetic declination and stuff... That would be the other direction(finding true north from compass reading and the other way around). But this is easy and good as well.

Anyway, awesome videos, check it out if interested in XKFX.

Adding some more calculators and reworking the old ones, lately...

This can be helpful for people curious about True North:
https://www.bright-hall.net/xkfx/solarcompass

Trying to add all the stuff one may want to use in one place for Feng Shui... Won't handle too much use, but don't imagine too many people will, as complex systems. : )

Well... Our part seems to work better then fine, yet it turns out OSM maps are just not accurate enough for this.
(the position of the buildings isn't precise)

There are countless alternatives, and logically satellite maps may be more accurate, but most of them are paid. So we will leave it like this for now. If one day there is open enough alternative to OSM we will see if that is more accurate. Until then, the method works, the result may not, however. Not with the precision we need, for this, anyway. : )
