FORMES ET ASPECTS

FORMS AND ASPECTS

The terms of Form or relate to the whole
the forms of things (shi wu) of the world of time and space - the concrete forms being in infinite number, it is not possible to identify them individually, the Yi Jing has therefore resorted to a system of representation and using the abstract to represent the concrete. This representation is created by the grouping of Yang __ and Yin_  _  levels grouped together
• in three levels to form one of eight possible trigrams
• in six levels to form one of sixty-four hexagrams.
In Chinese, the terms trigram and hexagram translate into one word: gua. Gua ( ) is the homophone of another term, that of 'hanging'; a root that communicates the idea of an object that has been suspended in order to be better observed in all its aspects. This Yin-Yang-based reductive scoring system allows Yi Jing to divide all things (shi wu) into eight simple categories (the eight trigrams) of immediate comprehension - provided they know how to grasp them and represent them to themselves. all their plenitude and in all their aspects (above, meaning of the root Gua. The underlying logic remains the Chinese logic li) which embraces both the understandings of Yin and Yang.

----------------------
1. The phenomenological terms (in English)  "of apperception",
apprehension, "appresentation" and the eidetic approaches of the same school, would be directly relevant. This is beyond our scope and I do not dwell on it...
