Two days' back, I saw an FB post saying that Jerry King, an international Fengshui master, passed away after battling cancer.

Jerry King DOB: August 1st 1976 -- June 10 2025 (49 yrs old)

This morning, I received a message form an EU friend, saying that Howard Choy, another internationally known fengshui master, also passed away on the same day as Jerry King.

Howard Choy DOB 1949 X X -- 1June 10 2025. (79 yrs old)

In all my years of studying and practicing Daoism, Buddhism and Chinese Metaphysics, I had heard of many Fengshui practitioners dying young.

What I had learnt from my first master was 一命,二运,三风水。1 Life-fate, 2 Luck, 3 Fengshui.

Nobody can escape death, but how long can a person live?

Why does a famous Fengshui master die at 49 yr old?
Why does another, equally famous, die at 79?

First, it depends on their Life-fate (Bazi).  Luck comes second and Fengshui comes third.

There is a Chinese saying:“阎王叫你三更死,谁敢留人到五更”.

This saying translates as:  "Lord Yama, the god of death, wants you dead at the third hour, who dares make the person live till the fifth hour?"

The intrinsic meaning of this saying is that -- 'when you are fated to die, you shall die'.

But, strangely, I have experienced reading bazi of people supposedly to die at a certain period of time, but because of their conscientious religious practice, their lives were extended, a bit.  Is it strange or is it fated?

So, friends, ......

Here is one advice that I always give to my students--
"Conscientiously build up a store of good merits to support your work as a Chinese Metaphysician."

Hi MoonChin,

Sorry to hear about Jerry King and Howard Choy. RIP to both.

On the matter of ‘一命,二运,三风水。’, an extended version is ‘一命,二运,三风水,四积阴德,五读书’ (1. Life-fate, 2. Luck, 3. Fengshui, 4. Accumulate virtue quietly, 5. Studying’):
  • I see ‘Accumulate virtue quietly’ as relating to your point that a person should ‘build up a store of good merits’.
  • I regard ‘Life-fate’ (命) as more static while ‘Luck’ (运) is more dynamic. A practitioner or person who anticipates problems in her/his coming luck-cycle (运), could choose to take action to mitigate the effects by changing Fengshui (风水), accumulating virtue/merit (积阴德) and studying the root causes of situations (读书).
For example, Howard Choy was a Qigong practitioner. So he did something about his health.

Hi all,

Furthering the discussion, I suggest Bazi may not cover ‘life-fate’ comprehensively. Bazi draws on the ‘time’ sub-factor of the Heaven of Heaven-Earth-Man (天地人). Other factors also affect life-fate.

For example, two babies with the exact same Bazi chart:
  • Earth factor. Born in different geographies (e.g. war-torn Gaza vs stable Singapore), they will face different life opportunities despite having the same luck pillars.
  • Man factor. Born to different parents, they will of course inherit different genes and socio-economic circumstances. One set of parents may have a family history of cancer (e.g. Jerry's?) while the other does not. The risk of serious illness may already differ at birth.
The above perspective does not diminish the efficacy of Bazi. Better to have some knowledge of future possibility than not.

Cheers.
