Is the theory of biorhythms valid?
« on: August 18, 2022, 08:11:03 PM »
Biorhythms are a theory proposed at the end of the 19th century that dictates that human beings have biological cycles (physical, emotional, intellectual, etc.) based on our date of birth. The cycles can range from 23 to 33 days. There are interesting similarities with the 33 year cycle theory, the cycles of the moon, women's menstruation, etc.

It was a very popular system in the 70's, at the height of the "New Age". Even airlines used it to avoid accidents at work, or in competitive sports.

However, in later years it has been discredited by scientific studies. Thus directly the wikipedia entry specifies "pseudoscience"

Out of curiosity I asked the yijing.

Is the theory of biorhythms valid?
- YongShen: Parent (as theory)

Complicated hexagram. I think the vital thing here is whether the San He of water is formed (Hai-Mao-Wei). If it is formed it involves the Self line and the Yong shen (Mao parent)

The only way for the San He not to form would be to clash the RL6 You metal. According to Jack Chiu the active line doing the clash must be vitalised by Day to prevent the formation of San He. However You is only vitalised by the month (devitalised by the Wu day) and is far away from the L1 Mao Parent.

What do you think about it? Any comments would be helpful.

Hi Sacrar,

The Yong Shen for theory is Parent.  In this hexagram, Parent is Mao Wood.  Regardless of the San He of Wood, the Parent line has no support from the Month and Day.  It's actually overcome by the Day.  Therefore, this theory is very weak.

Note: you wrote "San He of Water", but I'm sure you meant "Wood" instead of "Water.

The Sixth Line changes to You Metal, and You Metal clashes Mao.  This means the scientific world does not approve this theory.

Thanks for your reply JLim.

Hi Sacrar,

The Yong Shen for theory is Parent.  In this hexagram, Parent is Mao Wood.  Regardless of the San He of Wood, the Parent line has no support from the Month and Day.  It's actually overcome by the Day.  Therefore, this theory is very weak.

The Sixth Line changes to You Metal, and You Metal clashes Mao.  This means the scientific world does not approve this theory.

But in San He if it is formed doesn't it supposedly tend to stabilise the 3 elements and strengthen them?

Mao is only one of the elements, Hai water and Wei earth are both strong.

Just my thoughts, not sure.

We may say that San He is strong, but then in Liu Yao, the Month and Day are of utmost importance.  Wood obtains Qi from neither of them.  In fact Wood is also overcome by the Day (Metal).

My interpretation based on the above is the following: this theory looks scientific, but it's actually weak.  I would agree with the term used in wikipedia "pseudoscience".
