I think he does not have good luck in preserving his scholarly honor.  Here is the Liu Yao analysis:

1) Yong Shen for scholarly honor is Officer line. Based on the ancient time (when the text was written), 功名 scholarly honor refers to Officer, rather than Parents line.
2) Ji Shen for scholarly honor is Offspring line.
3) Yong Shen is the 2^nd line Yin Wood, which is weak by Wu Month and Chen Day
4) Ji Shen is Shen Metal, which is supported by Chen Earth, because Earth produces Metal
5) Shen Metal clashes Yin Wood, so Ji Shen clashes Yong Shen.
6) Shen progresses towards You, so Ji Shen gets stronger over time.  The principle is 兇神不宜化進, it's not good when an inauspicious god is a progressive line.
7) It's now Wu Month; in Shen or You month, Ji Shen will be at its peak, that's the probable time that he loses his scholarly honor.

8 ) We also look at the Parents line for more information, which represents the examination's content.  Parents line coming with White Tiger usually means he will get very tough questions in the examination.

Ji Shen = Annoying God

... as you can see Shi / self is 4th yang yao ... and not "yin shi line" ... you calculated Gua Shen as Yin yao ...!!... I think you follow the correct procedure...

Six clashes (no ) does not applied to this case becouse Shi/self Yao is saved by the Liu he with the 6th producted Wei yao  (Wu - Wei )..... the 6th yao is secretly moving by the clash of day Chen on the 6th Xu yao ....

My best likely explanation on this case study is focussing on Upper thunder Gua on first hexagram 34 is Fan yin with lake upper gua of Hexagram 43 ... offspring lake metal producted trigram clashes (fan yin) and subdue officer thunder wood officer source upper trigram... too bad for the officer's outstanding fame and glory (upper -outer trigram s )

Another supportive glimpse is Fu Shen of Gua Shen Mao officer on 3rd yao .. this is bad for fame and glory ... !!

Hi Tientai, I'm afraid I don't agree with the Liu He combination, because 6^th line is not a changing line.
As you can see in this app, the resultant hexagram (the right side) does not show Branches on non-changing lines.  In this hexagram, there is only one changing line, so the resultant hexagram only shows one Branch, which is the 酉You Branch (5^th line).

According to the rules I'm familiar with Xu is active line.
Day Branch clashes it and Day Branch interacts with all lines...

However... That doesn't make it moving it makes it active. Active means it can produce/support/vitalize any other line. This type of active lines usually have very limited effect, from rules I work with they can't combine or clash or many other things...
Sometimes called "frenzied active", since it doesn't move lead by it's own intention/motivation, but the outside circumstances(Day/Month) leads it to movement.

This is interesting:

If Xu was moving it would turn to Xu, however since upper trigram would turn to Qian. : )
But when you say "saved", does it mean you also consider the rules of Six clash on "yes/no" question?


About the case... Jlim style of reading is very different then what I'm using, so I prefer not to participate... His forum after all, but it is very interesting to read these quizes, thank you for translation. : )
